The Unemployment Journey

With only a Form Four certificate, life was a struggle for Cindy. Securing employment seemed impossible due to lack of skills. For one and a half years, she spent time idling, unable to break into the job market. The absence of opportunities and meaningful engagement left her feeling stuck but she never gave up on searching for a breakthrough.  

Gaining the Skills to Succeed  

As soon as she heard about the opportunities that Generation Kenya offered, she knew this was her lifeline. She quickly enrolled in the retail and restaurant program. Eager to learn and grow, she embraced every moment of the program, finding no significant challenges along the way. “I was too eager to learn, I found nothing challenging,” she says. The training met her expectations and instilled confidence, opening opportunities for her as she imagined.  

 

Starting a Career with Artcaffe Coffee & Bakery  

Upon graduation, Cindy secured a position as a waitress at Artcaffe Coffee & Bakery. This role marked the beginning of a transformative career journey. After working as a waitress for two years, her ambition led her to pursue further education. She earned a degree in Human Resource Management through a sponsorship opportunity and now hold the position of HR Admin Assistant.  “Later on, I was able to secure another sponsorship where I graduated with a degree in HR.” She proudly notes.

Transforming Lives at Home and Work 

 The impact of the program laid the foundation for her career growth, enabling her to transition from a waitress to an HR professional. On a personal level, she is now able to contribute to her family’s financial stability, easing the burden of bills at home and creating a better future for her loved ones.  “Thanks to generation I can help with the financial bills at home,” She highlights.

Reflecting on her journey, she is grateful to Generation Kenya for setting the foundation for her success. “Thank you for giving me the chance to be who I am today,” she says, a testament to the life-changing impact of the program.
