Generation for County Governments

We partner with county governments to accelerate employment and economic mobility.

How we work

How does Generation work with County Governments?

Generation Kenya has embraced a county-based approach in its program delivery to maximize reach, enhance efficiency, and create lasting impact at the local level. By partnering with counties including Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Nairobi, and Kilifi, we leverage existing government institutions like TVETs and digital hubs to deliver our programs effectively. This partnership model allows us to tap into established infrastructure and resources, accelerating program implementation and optimizing support for youth across these regions.

In Nakuru County, the local government has demonstrated a strong commitment by fully dedicating the Shabaab Digital Center to our Digital Freelance Program, providing complete access to computers and utilities. Such contributions are pivotal in bridging resource gaps and ensuring that youth have the tools they need to develop valuable digital skills. Moreover, county governments assist in mobilizing youth, particularly in underserved communities, expanding our ability to reach those who would benefit most from these opportunities.

Additionally, Generation Kenya has played an active role in contributing to the development of County Integrated Development Plans for counties such as Nairobi, Nakuru, and Makueni. Through this involvement, we help shape strategic planning to ensure that workforce development and youth empowerment are integral to county goals, creating an ecosystem where young people can thrive within their communities.

Generation Kenya is currently present across 4

County Governments. But was present in up to 27 previously.

How Generation Kenya Engage Both County and National Governments

Generation Kenya has footprints across 27+ regions/counties. This is underpinned by strategic partnership agreements and leveraging existing government infrastructure for training initiatives. Through formal agreements with 9 counties, (Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Nairobi) Generation Kenya  maximizes its impact by utilizing government facilities and resources, thereby optimizing operational efficiency and extending its reach to underserved communities.

In collaboration with county governments, Generation Kenya benefits from various forms of support, including mobilization of learners and access to extensive networks of organizations that facilitate outreach efforts. County governments play a crucial role in mobilizing youth to participate in Generation’s programs, thereby enhancing the organization’s ability to reach its target demographic effectively. Additionally, the linkages provided by county governments to other organizations’ networks further amplify Generation’s outreach efforts, facilitating broader community engagement and participation.

Case studies

Partnering with Governments to provide pathways to employment

Generation Kenya has forged strategic partnerships with various levels of government to create pathways to employment for youth. This collaboration involves several key initiatives:

Curriculum Alignment

Generation Kenya works closely with government bodies to align its training curriculum with national skills development frameworks and industry needs. This ensures that the skills imparted to learners are relevant and in line with the demands of the job market. Our Sewing Machine Operators Curriculum has been accredited by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC) has also accredited our Distributed Sales and Financial Sales Service Program.

Work-Based Learning Programs

The organization collaborates with government agencies to implement work-based learning programs, where youth gain practical experience through training and placement through our programs.  We have done this with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection State Department For Labour and Skills Development.

Policy Advocacy

Generation actively engages in policy advocacy to influence government policies related to education, skills development, and youth employment. By providing data-driven insights and sharing best practices, the organization contributes to the formulation of policies that support youth employment initiatives.

What we are doing with Generation Kenya is a big success because the youth we have trained is a huge step forward. What Generation Kenya is doing is a success because most of the youth are earning online and are no longer coming to offices looking for jobs.””
